Jackpot slots, priced honestly: who funds the prize and what it costs you
A jackpot slot sells two things at once: a normal game and a lottery ticket. Knowing how much of each you are paying for is the whole skill.
Jackpot slots are the most misunderstood games in any lobby, mostly because the prize meter is designed to be looked at. A number ticking upwards feels like progress, as though the game is getting closer to paying. It is not. What the meter really measures is how many people have played since it last dropped, and every one of them paid a little into it. You will be one of them too.
What types of jackpot slot are there?
| Type | Where the prize comes from | Typical prize | Effect on ordinary returns |
|---|---|---|---|
| Networked progressive | A slice of stakes from players at many casinos | The largest, with the longest odds | The biggest reduction |
| Local progressive | A slice of stakes at one operator's games | Smaller, drops more often | A moderate reduction |
| Fixed jackpot | Built into the game's paytable | A stated amount that never moves | Little or none |
The first two behave like a shared pot; the third is really just a large top prize with a dramatic name. If you like the idea of a jackpot but not the cost, fixed-prize games are the gentler option.
How much does the jackpot cost me per spin?
Here is the arithmetic that rarely gets shown. Imagine two slots with a similar feel. One has no jackpot and a published return of 96.5%, which is the figure for Gates of Olympus and Sweet Bonanza on their standard settings. The other sends part of every stake to a progressive pot, so its return in ordinary play is lower; for the sake of the example, say 94%.
Play 400 spins at €0.50 on each, €200 staked. On the first game the average cost is about €7. On the second it is about €12, and the extra €5 or so is, in effect, the price of your jackpot ticket for the evening. Whether that is good value depends entirely on how much you enjoy holding the ticket. The game's help screen shows its actual figures, and a comparison of high-return games is on high RTP slots.
Is a jackpot more likely to drop when it is very large?
No, and this is the belief that costs players the most. Each spin is independent. A pot that has been growing for months has the same chance of dropping on your spin as one that dropped yesterday. What changes is the size of the prize, which alters the value of the ticket without altering the odds of winning it. Some players use a very large pot as a reason to play a jackpot game instead of a standard one, which is a defensible choice. Using it as a reason to play longer is not.
Does my stake affect my chance of winning the jackpot?
On some games it does. Certain progressives raise the chance of the jackpot feature with the stake, and some only open the top prize above a set bet. Others treat every stake the same. Read the rules screen before you start: if the chance scales with the bet, playing at the minimum is fine, but you are buying a smaller ticket and you should know it.
What about Mini, Minor, Major and Grand?
Many jackpot games now show three or four named tiers. The lower ones land far more often and are what most people actually win. A useful test of any jackpot slot is whether you would still enjoy it if the Grand did not exist. If the smaller tiers are fun in themselves, it is a good game. If only the top tier interests you, you are back to buying a lottery ticket.
How should I budget a jackpot session at Casino Purple?
Carve off a fixed slice of the evening for jackpot spins and play the rest on ordinary slots. With a €60 budget, for example, €10 might go to the jackpot game. When that €10 is gone, the jackpot part of the night is over, whatever the meter says. The welcome match helps here: a €60 first deposit with PURPLE100 becomes €120 to work with, subject to the wagering on the promotions page. If you lose the deposit, the welcome package lists a 35% refund, which is €21 back on that €60. Every current offer is listed on our Casino Purple promotions page.

Jackpot slot questions
What is the difference between a progressive and a fixed jackpot?
A progressive grows from a share of every stake until it drops. A fixed jackpot is a stated prize that never changes, and the game usually returns more in ordinary play as a result.
Do jackpot slots have a lower RTP?
In ordinary play, generally yes, because part of each stake funds the top prize instead of paying out in regular wins.
Is a big jackpot "due" to drop?
No. The prize is bigger, but the chance on any single spin is the same.
Can I use the PURPLE100 bonus on jackpot slots?
The match adds to your balance and you choose the games. How each game counts towards the wagering is set out on Casino Purple's promotions page.
Should I bet the maximum on a jackpot slot?
Only if the rules screen shows the jackpot depends on stake and the higher bet fits your budget. Otherwise the minimum is fine.
